Stuff, October is here!?!

I am rediscovering internet radio and am listening to Pandora Radio. You can create your own station with the type of music that you like. Some of the songs on my channel (Old 97s) are songs I already own on a cd. But for some reason they sound cooler online in a mix with other groups. This summer for about a week, I was listening to this station in D/FW on FM 93 somewheres, they played music that suited me and sure enough they reformatted and its like Top 100 now. Boo.

Well, doing devotions online will not make one do them…you just have to do them, and so I tell myself. My professor said that statistics show that 80% (more?) of pastors do not read the bible outside of the times they are preparing sermons and teaching. Shame on us. Part of me has been wondering about how I can tie in the web with ministry? Basically I find myself getting online quite a bit…and so I thought I can marry the internet with devotional life and such. Lessons learned, one needs to have a devotional life to which to wed! For me the conflict is that I like to write in my Bible, and when you pull up Bible Gateway or The Net Bible or ESV online, you can’t write on the screen! Or you shouldn’t! Also learning to discipline myself and basically make the time to be with the Lord. After all devotions are about the person which you are meeting and not about a notch on the old planner.

Alright so Pandora radio says its part of the Music Genome Project, pretty pithy (witty and smart) anyhoo, I chose Old 97s as my channel, and the Pandora search engine analyzes all its database and pulls up songs with the same beat and such. So I get alongside the Old 97s -groups I also happen to like. Like Johnny Cash! Wilco, Ween, Weezer, Cake…

Random thought: I wonder if we will play football in heaven? Is football heaven on earth? Well not when you get popped really good! Heaven on earth; aww, memories of my baby and my “baby momma”. ok, maybe more thougths later.

John the Baptist was quite the character? He seemed to make his own style and his own lifestyle. Yet he preached something beyond our lives. He preached repentence and confession of sin.

But ultimately what was his ministry?

I just may plant myself in Matthew 3. And as time is short today, I must return another day. It seem abrupt, all of a sudden, we go from Jesus’ younger years, where he even is under the care of Joseph and Mary (they take him from place to place) and then we see he is grown up, and seeking baptism…but the story begins with John the Baptist. Mentioning John sets up what is to happen at the latter part of Chapter 3.

Interesting what John says about the Jewish people. Interesting in that I rec’d a comment about my use of mezuzah in yesterday’s post. (I think it was a comment about my use of Mezuzah. The commentor uses it too! Hola tocayo.

Terrible events as Herod attmepts to kill babies in search of destroying a “threat”. Eventually Herod would die. Although this does not make it possible for Joseph and Mary to return to Judea but go to Galilee. Which is significant because they end up in Nazareth. Nazareth being a place that is despised, and Christ would be despised (as prophesied in the OT.)

I haven’t blogged in over a month. So it is time to get on the saddle again. To continue where I left off in Matthew. Gonna tackle two verses today. Yesterday in Sunday School we looked at how God talked to Job through/in a storm. Here he sends his message via an angel. Which incidentally means messenger…angel that is. Yet this angel appeared in his dream (v. 13). Our lesson in Sunday School asked us, in what ways God has spoken to us…and one way was through people. I think I had that experience yesterday, as Godly men encouraged me, and I heard God through them.

This morning, I am breaking down chapter 2 into parts, and these dozen or so verses tell the story of the magi. They were a group of old regarded for their wisdom. Perhaps a “first century a.d.” entourage like what we sent to North Korea to free our hostages…ok, perhaps not. But I noticed that when they arrived at Jesus’ house (not at the place of his birth) they bowed down and worshipped.

I have heard that their gifts were of significance: gold fit for a king, frankincense used for worship and a symbol of Christ’s purity, and myrrh was used in embalming…truly a foretaste of the death (and resurrection) of the man who would be the Savior of mankind (Matt. 1:21).

I am reminded of our Pastor, D.G. Saul who said in a sermon that God knows us and cares for us by name, just look at all the names listed in the bible. This chapter is the genealogy of the Messiah (annointed one), Jesus. It is interesting to note that four women of dubious background: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba (or the wife of Uriah) are included in this background. We have all heard that perhaps this is setting the stage for Mary, who is a virgin who is with child…(yeah right, the people are thinking). But verse 18 tells us that indeed this is a supernatural birth. In verse 23 we see that this was predicted by Isaiah. At the end of Chapter 1, we see Joseph was convinced through his actions (v. 24).

In the past the prevailing dream was to fly through the air like those guys in the kung fu movies…but mostly I dream of dribbling a basketball through a montage of players. I see myself manipulating the ball between the legs, around the back, do the ole ‘Utep Two Step’ (cross over)…and take it to the basket. I’m not that much of a dreamer, I don’t dunk, but simply lay if off the glass.

Sometimes the dream is of me running down the field, the ball has already been released into the air by the qb-me, and I’m now the receiver, running past the defender, I can smell the grass, hear the roar of the crowd, I look up and amidst the lights is the pigskin, I reach out…

Kindle my fire for books…

I am wondering, “Do I make a new category for e-readers?” I don’t expect to write anymore about them…perhaps I can edit later!

Well I noticed that quite a few folks are bloggers, and I thought I would get back into the blogging community after a brief absence. My thoughts, “so many journals and nothing to say”…or you say it so much that it becomes just so much white noise. Everyone seems to be on Facebook and FB doesn’t lend itself to blogging really.

In a somewhat related story, I read that albums/records/vinyl is back. That people are beginning to return to vinyl…so I wonder if people will return from digital reading to good ole paper.

Oh, about the e-reader…for the past 10 years there have been attempts at different devices…but it seems like this Kindle thing is quite hot. I am passively lusting for one, but I wonder, “Will I ever use one?” I do like to carry books…I am also reminded of my Visor Handspring which lasted 2 years and died! I am reminded of the Technology (elephant) graveyard amongst my things, these are items used sparingly, or due to time became obsolete and just collect in a box among my belongings. But oh would it be nice to havea Kindle.
